The Sharon Emergency Management Director  is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive emergency preparedness plans, coordinating response efforts during disasters, and overseeing recovery activities in collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies, ensuring the safety of the community by minimizing risks while maintaining close communication with Sharon elected officials, road crews, and Peterborough public safety personnel.

Peterborough Public Safety personnel and Sharon Road Director are the first responders and staff emergency incidents.  Coordination with the Peterborough EMD is critical to ensure that the Peterborough personnel are supported by the town to perform their duties.

 Key responsibilities

Planning and Preparedness:
• Conduct hazard vulnerability assessments to identify potential risks every 5 years.
• Coordinate with Peterborough Fire and Police to establish roles and responsibilities during emergencies.
• Organize and conduct emergency preparedness training exercises and drills on an annual basis.
• Educate the public on disaster preparedness measures through the town website.

Response and Coordination:
• Activate the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the Meetinghouse during major incidents.
• Monitor emergency situations and provide timely updates to the Sharon Selectboard.
• Coordinate town responses with local, state and federal agencies.
• Manage communication systems during emergencies.
• Implement the Emergency Communications Team if appropriate.  See SOP.
• Implement evacuation plans and Meetinghouse shelter operations when necessary. See SOP.

Recovery and Mitigation:
• Conduct damage assessments following disasters.
• Facilitate the recovery process by coordinating with federal and state agencies to access funding.
• Develop and implement long-term mitigation strategies to reduce future disaster impacts, as reflected in the Hazard Management Plan.
• Analyze post-disaster response to identify areas for improvement.

Collaboration and Leadership:
• Establish strong working relationships with local officials, public safety agencies, and community organizations.
• Attend Selectboard Meetings as often as possible.
• Serve as point of contact for Sharon for regional and state
emergency management forums.
• Foster a culture of emergency preparedness within the community.

Skills and Qualifications:
• Strong understanding of (or willingness to learn about) the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
• Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making abilities.
• Proficiency in crisis management and incident command principles to ensure good relationships with other responders.
• Knowledge of local geography, hazards, and community vulnerabilities.
• Experience with grant writing and budget management, or willingness to learn.
