  • 2024 Tax Rate Explanation

    The Sharon Select Board met on Thursday, November 14, 2024, to review the 2024 preliminary tax rate provided by the NH Department of Revenue. The preliminary rate suggested by the DRA was $16.13 per $1,000 of taxable property value. However, the Select Board elected to use $81,000 of unassigned fund balance to offset increases which means the final tax rate for 2024 is $15.36 per $1,000 of taxable property value.

    The 2023 tax rate was $23.27 per thousand.   If adjusted to account for the increase in taxable value due to the 2024 town wide reevaluation, the comparable 2023 tax rate would be $12.99.

    It is anticipated that the Sharon tax bills will be mailed on November 22.

    The Tax Collector bills and collects the taxes for four taxing authorities — Municipal, County, School, and State.

    The Town portion of the tax rate is $3.75

    The school portion of the tax rate is $10.04

    The state portion of the tax rate is $0.91

    The county portion of the tax rate is $0.66

    TOTAL = $15.36

    Why is this bill higher than my spring bill?

    Your spring bill is an estimate based on 50% of the prior year’s taxes.  The fall bill is based on the actual tax rate for the year, set by the State of New Hampshire Department of Revenue (NH DRA). The amount of the fall bill is the actual amount of taxes due for the year minus any payments from the spring billing.

    Because the budgets for the four taxing authorities change annually, and the spring bill is an estimate based on the prior year’s tax rate, it is to be expected that the amount on the fall bill will be different than the amount on the spring bill in any given year.
